THE DOUBLE & THE FOLD
The Double: Created around the idea of the double, the bench translates into object form the practice of the founding duo of AÉ02 studio. Through compositional plays of duplication, mirroring, and folding, the pieces define a way of organizing space through rhythm and interval. Built from a limited vocabulary of surfaces, from the same matter, but different perspectives, the pieces symbolically mark a symbiotic relationship that exceeds individual contributions. Drawing on Henri Lefebvre’s idea that space is produced through relations and use, the bench transforms the principle of the double into an architectural instance. Aluminum and piano-finish lacquer appear here as complementary materials, part of the architects’ own lexical field.
The Fold: The wall lamp follows the same logic of the double, at a more intimate scale. The folded surface produces a double movement: it receives and redirects light, becoming simultaneously body and reflector, structure and atmosphere. The fold gives the object its formal tension, transforming a simple plane into an active surface. Drawing on Deleuze’s idea of the fold as a fundamental unit of reality, movement, and expression, bringing together classical philosophy, modern science, art, and architecture, the lamp operates with the same sense of depth and alters the perception of the space around it. Together, the two pieces illustrate AÉ02’s interest in composition and rhythm.
